You are quite right — the BOC is white. Yes, I do think it can change. In fact, I think we’re on our way to just that. That happens, IMO, by approaching damage from racism like damage from any other form of abuse. There was a time when, for example, date rape was actually not considered rape. Society made it too uncomfortable to sustain that thinking, the pressure forced a conduct shift. The goal was not to control the thinking, only the behavior.

I think that model works. I think it’s far more reasonable than what we do now — “teach” or “learn.” I think it’s appropriate — no one gets to be any one else’s thought police. I think it depersonalizes it — I am not calling you a racist. I am saying if you do X, I’m going to make sure you lose your job. I think it’s good common sense — nobody can sustain change through an altruism model, and that’s our current approach.

Eventually, the pressure will force a behavior change. Thing is, I don’t care one way or another if a person is racist. I care when that person spills his/her racist on someone else. I believe that’s a workable model we should explore.
