Using your alcoholism example, say someone speaking with an alcoholic. The topic is alcoholism. The speaker does not know whether the person she is speaking to drinks alcohol even. If she said, "alcoholism is the reason it's so hard to get insurance" is the listener likely to reply with some variation of defending an alcoholic(s)?
