"The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny."

Mmm, King is saying to Malcolm X et al and SNCC - "relax with the militancy; whites are figuring out that they rise or fall with us." I don't see how is that color v. character affirming.

I mean no disrespect, but the substance is a bit bigger than the literal text. It exists in the times it was delivered. They cannot be divorced if one wants a true and comprehensive understanding.

I would argue that even a literal reading does not reach "do not judge each other" but instead says "do not judge us." I can understand how that can be missed.

But even then, the speech is not meant as distinct from the events leading up to its delivery. You needn't know them, but knowing them stops most from making the more superficial - and incorrect - assumptions. That is all.
